My first encounter with Hokkaido feels like a love letter, with each word and sentence warming the heart. From Otaru to Asahikawa, from Sapporo to Furano, these enchanting cities turn Hokkaido into our land of romance.
10 Love Letters to Hokkaido (1)
-Sapporo
Dear H,
I have arrived in Hokkaido.
In spring, cherry blossoms blanket the city; in summer, the countryside is in full bloom; in autumn, the serene red leaves adorn the landscapes, and in winter, the land is covered in pristine snow. In the fantasies of many, Hokkaido is synonymous with romance. And indeed, Hokkaido does not disappoint. From movies like “Love Letter” to TV dramas like “First Love,” the cities of Hokkaido beautifully set the scene for romance.
Sapporo’s streets are both tranquil and lively. Despite being Japan’s fifth-largest city with a dense population, Sapporo’s orderly grid layout is surrounded by greenery, and remnants of buildings from the pioneer era can be found throughout the city. Couples can walk hand in hand through the streets, visit Japan’s oldest clock tower, gaze at the TV tower, stroll in the oasis-like Odori Park, or share a serving of ice cream parfait at a local café.
Susukino, on the other side of Sapporo, is bustling with a different charm. Lively streets are filled with colourful neon lights and numerous dining outlets, and the countless stores in Tanukikoji fill all your shopping desires. Sapporo at night is a perfect destination for young and adventurous lovers.
I’m beginning to miss you.
