A Journey to Istanbul

A Journey to Istanbul

The flight number I was on this time is 123, and it sounded so simple, travel should be this simple. Our journey from Dubai took us across the Persian Gulf, cruising over Iraq’s key cities before entering Turkey on the eastern side. We flew past a city called Batman before witnessing the sight of picturesque hills and rolling mountains. About four hours later, Istanbul welcomed us. Airport procedures were smooth, there was no need to present Covid vaccination documents and entry was granted in less than a minute. I felt free and full of hope.

Where to Stay

For first-time visitors, definitely make it a must to visit the Fatih or Eminonu districts of Istanbul, on the European side. There are lots to see and do, and most of the primary sights are here.

We recommend staying at the Crowne Plaza Istanbul in Old Town, which is several tram stops from the must-visit Hagia Sophia. The tram station itself is a mere three minute walk from the hotel lobby. Another hotel nearby is the Hilton. We booked our stay on Traveloka for better rates and this area was our home for five nights. We also stayed nearby the Blue Mosque in a boutique hotel.

Memories to Highlight

1. Opposite the Crowne Plaza Istanbul is a mosque that you must visit. We went up to capture the beauty of the city—the trees, trams, and a very visible moon. It was also eight degrees in early spring (end of March); it was magical!

2. Taking the Istanbul Metro is also fun. Just get the travel card and top up as you go.

3. This one is a global tip that works everywhere. Ask your concierge where they e at after work. We found two simple eateries nearby in Old Town and kept going back, either to start or end the day. Prices are low too, as it is away from the tourist areas.

4. Take ferry rides and see Istanbul from another perspective. There are many ferries and rides to choose from, and the cost is very reasonable—approximately 0.50 USD per ride, based on the exchange rates in March 2023.

The Baklava Affair

In Istanbul, there are a few things to check off the list and visiting Galata Tower is one of it. Do wear comfortable shoes, as some of the walking paths are steep. Another item to check off the list would be baklava. Our most memorable encounter with the dessert was in Kadikoy, a ferry ride away on the Asian side of Istanbul. The humble shop owner spoke very little but always has a smile on his face with a calculator in his hand. We bought a variety box of baklavas and the price was cheaper by 40% than the places in downtown Istanbul.

With the box of baklava in hand, I headed to the pier. It was a cold, windy day, and I soaked it all in. The passing ferries, the iconic seagulls, and the peace and serenity of a colder than usual spring all came together nicely. After having left, Istanbul has been calling out to me, and one day, I will be back.
