Breathtaking natural backdrops, the UNESCO World Heritage, historical trains and much more – the Rhaetian Railway fascinates people from all over the world, winding its way like a red thread through Switzerland’s biggest canton, combing sightseeing attractions with natural landscapes to create a unique experience.
Rhaetian Railway’s Albula and Bernina Lines are masterpieces of railway engineering and are among the most spectacular stretches of railway in the world. They have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2008. On its journey from Thusis to Tirano, the Rhaetian Railway passes through 55 tunnels and crosses 196 bridges. One such crossing is the Landwasser Viaduct. This unique structure showcases the engineering skills and pioneering days of the railway and is at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The train winds its way through wild gorges and across daring viaducts past picturesque villages, offering forever new and fascinating views of the raw beauty of the Alps and the impressive architecture of the highest railway line in Europe.
To the top of the Rhaetian Railway
The Bernina Express, Rhaetian Railway’s classic train, is a rolling legend and one of the most famous trains in the world. On the highest railway tracks in Europe and the steepest in the world, the Bernina Express takes its passengers on a unique journey. From the oldest city in Switzerland up to the eternal ice of the glaciers then back down to the palm trees in the Italian town of Tirano, no other Alpine crossing is so spectacular. The luxurious panoramic cars offer first-class travel comfort and make the impressive landscape appear almost within reach.
Besides beautiful natural landscapes, the Rhaetian Railway also offers passengers the opportunity to experience a piece of railway history. During the summer, historical train compositions from the 1920s run twice a day between Davos and Filisur. Nostalgic 1st and 2nd class carriages, pulled by the legendary cult Crocodile locomotive from 1929, turn a 40-minute ride into a journey through time.
Double the delights in Gourmino
A journey aboard the Gourmino dining car is even more delightful. Passengers are served an exclusive three-course meal while watching the fascinating landscape of the Albula Line between Chur and St. Moritz pass by. The unique atmosphere in the nostalgic Gourmino dining car from the 1930s transports passengers into another time. Freshly prepared dishes using local produce are served against the backdrop of the UNESO World Heritage, creating a double delight for the senses.
A journey aboard the Rhaetian Railway is an unforgettable travel experience. Heading off on holiday or embarking on a round trip – no one wants to reach their destination after riding the world-famous RhB rails.
